Types of Dental Imaging
They are generally divided into two main categories: intraoral and extraoral.
Extraoral X-rays include
- Panoramic Radiograph (OPG): A general view of all the teeth, used to assess overall oral health.
- Cephalometric Radiograph: A lateral view of the jaw for orthodontics, showing angles and jaw position.
- Cone Beam CT (CBCT): High-resolution 3D images of the teeth, used for implants, surgery, and detailed root evaluation; more expensive than other types of imaging.
Intraoral X-rays include
- Bitewing Radiograph: Commonly used in routine checkups to detect interproximal cavities (between the teeth).
- Periapical Radiograph: Shows the entire tooth from crown to root tip, useful for detecting infections and abscesses.
- Occlusal Radiograph: Displays the entire dental arch of one jaw (upper or lower) in a single image.
