Types of Dental Imaging

They are generally divided into two main categories: intraoral and extraoral.

Extraoral X-rays include

  1. Panoramic Radiograph (OPG): A general view of all the teeth, used to assess overall oral health.
  2. Cephalometric Radiograph: A lateral view of the jaw for orthodontics, showing angles and jaw position.
  3. Cone Beam CT (CBCT): High-resolution 3D images of the teeth, used for implants, surgery, and detailed root evaluation; more expensive than other types of imaging.

Intraoral X-rays include

  1. Bitewing Radiograph: Commonly used in routine checkups to detect interproximal cavities (between the teeth).
  2. Periapical Radiograph: Shows the entire tooth from crown to root tip, useful for detecting infections and abscesses.
  3. Occlusal Radiograph: Displays the entire dental arch of one jaw (upper or lower) in a single image.
