Tooth sensitivity occurs when the protective layer of the tooth (enamel) becomes eroded or worn down. When the thickness and integrity of this layer decrease for any reason, it is referred to as enamel erosion.
Enamel erosion has various symptoms, with one of the most important being tooth sensitivity, which results from the exposure of the thin and sensitive layer of the tooth (dentin).
Dentin is located beneath the enamel and contains numerous tiny channels called tubules. Exposure of these tubules to cold and hot air or foods with varying temperatures causes tooth sensitivity, especially in the neck or cervical area of the tooth.
