Wisdom tooth surgery

How long does wisdom tooth surgery take?

Typically, it takes about 10 minutes to extract each tooth, but wisdom tooth extraction requires more time. Therefore, it may take around 20 to 30 minutes. However, if the wisdom tooth is impacted and needs surgery, more time may be required to remove it. The exact duration of the extraction depends on the type of impaction.

Pre-surgery care for wisdom tooth extraction:

  1. Individuals with underlying conditions such as heart problems, high blood pressure, or a history of diseases like organ transplants or strokes should consult with their doctor to receive the necessary pre-surgery guidelines for wisdom tooth extraction.
  2. People who take blood-thinning medications, such as aspirin, should discontinue these medications about two days before the surgery, based on the doctor’s advice.
  3. Additionally, it is recommended to avoid smoking for about three days before the wisdom tooth extraction.

Post-surgery care for wisdom tooth extraction:

  1. Keep the sterile gauze placed by your doctor on the surgery site in your mouth for one hour. Speak with your mouth closed, swallow your saliva, and avoid spitting.
  2. Apply a cold compress, provided by the clinic, during the first 24 hours. Place it on the wound for five minutes and then remove it. For the second 24 hours, rest. On the third day, if swelling persists, use a warm compress.
  3. If there is bleeding at the surgery site, moisten a tea bag, place it on the wound, and contact us.
  4. Once the anesthesia wears off, you may experience pain. To reduce the pain, take the painkillers prescribed by your doctor.
  5. On the second day, rinse your mouth using mouthwash or a saline solution (diluted saltwater) to disinfect.
  6. For the first 12 hours after the extraction or surgery, only consume cold, liquid foods. Avoid chewing on the side that underwent surgery for up to one week.
  7. For about a week after surgery, avoid heavy physical activity, smoking, and using a hookah.
  8. Finally, avoid disturbing the wound and stitches. If you experience any issues, please contact us.

Semi-impacted wisdom tooth surgery

If your wisdom tooth grows like the other teeth, it will be extracted using regular, non-surgical methods, and no wisdom tooth surgery is needed. However, if the wisdom tooth does not fully emerge from the gum and remains partially enclosed, surgery will be required. This is called a semi-impacted wisdom tooth. The surgery for a semi-impacted wisdom tooth is performed by a dentist, and it is essential to have the surgery as soon as possible to prevent gum inflammation and infection.

An important aspect of wisdom tooth surgery is the pre- and post-operative care, which we will discuss.
