Tooth post core

As mentioned, when a tooth experiences serious damage and conventional treatments cannot be used for restoration, dentists use the post and core method. This restoration consists of two parts:

Tooth Post

A post is a small metal rod that is placed inside the root space of a tooth, with its top protruding about 2 millimeters above the tooth. The post serves as a foundation for holding the crown in place and protects the remaining parts of the tooth.

Core

The core is a restorative method in which materials like composite or amalgam are used to repair the damaged structure of the tooth, preparing it for the placement of a crown. These materials help secure the crown in place and extend the lifespan of the post and core. If the core is not used to secure the crown, even a small impact (especially from the side of the tooth) can cause the crown to detach. The primary function of the post and core is to protect the dental crown.

When is Tooth Post and Core Necessary?

In a root canal treatment, part of the tooth structure and pulp is removed, and the tooth is cleaned. The pulp contains blood vessels, connective tissue, and nerves, all of which are eliminated during a root canal procedure. Sometimes, the damage to the tooth is extensive, and the dentist is forced to remove a significant portion of the tooth. As a result, the remaining structure may not be strong enough to withstand the heavy forces of chewing without being damaged.

In such cases, a post and core procedure is performed to strengthen the tooth so that it can hold the crown in place and restore the lost part of the tooth. Restoration without reinforcement would be ineffective, which is why the post and core provide a solid foundation.

Impression of the Root of the Root Canal Tooth

A prosthodontist takes an impression of the treated tooth’s root and sends it to the lab. The post is responsible for holding the crown or core in place, so it must be securely installed in the root to ensure the strength and longevity of the restoration.

Tooth Post Placement

After the tooth post is fabricated, the prosthodontist attaches it to the root using a special adhesive. The correct and flawless attachment of this piece is crucial for the longevity of the tooth. If the post is not properly placed, it will not be able to withstand the intense pressure from the jaw effectively. Immediately after the post is positioned, the prosthodontist sends the crown (or core) back to the laboratory for final adjustments.

Attaching the Crown to the Post

After the crown is fabricated, the prosthodontist carefully attaches it to the post. This connection is also made using a special adhesive. The prosthodontist must place the core correctly and precisely at the gum line to ensure that there is no noticeable difference in both aesthetics and strength compared to the other teeth.

The main advantage of the post and core is the reinforcement of the tooth structure and the ability to securely hold the crown in place.

Post and Core vs. Dental Implant

Dentists always aim to save the natural tooth whenever possible because nothing compares to your own teeth. Natural teeth have good durability, don’t cause complications, are cost-effective, don’t require invasive surgery, and don’t create trouble unless not cared for properly. However, all the care you provide to your natural teeth should also be applied to implants.

Sometimes, despite all efforts, the tooth becomes so damaged that extraction is inevitable. In these cases, dental implants are often the first recommendation of dentists because they are strong, durable, and have a long lifespan.
