Pin therapy
Let’s examine dental pins. A dental pin is a metal, screw-like rod used to help strengthen and rebuild the crowns of severely damaged teeth. After placing the dental pin in the decayed tooth, the crown should be restored with a suitable material such as amalgam, reinforced glass ionomers, or composite. Depending on the dentist’s diagnosis, the tooth may also need to undergo a crown treatment after reconstruction to prevent it from breaking down over time.
A tooth that has lost a significant amount of its crown due to decay or fracture can no longer withstand chewing pressures with just a filling. It will certainly break, or if lucky, the filling will detach. The pin acts as a column that transfers the forces applied to the crown and filling to the root, reducing the chances of the tooth breaking. However, sometimes placing a pin is not enough, and in such cases, before placing a crown and to restore the structure of the tooth’s crown, post and core treatment must be performed, which is the last resort to save the tooth before extraction.
The pin inside the tooth canal
The dental pins are placed inside the canal of a tooth that has undergone root canal treatment. Their retention inside the canal is achieved by applying special cements (adhesives). Dental pins come in various diameters and lengths, and they must be selected according to the diameter and length of the tooth’s canal to ensure necessary strength without causing the root of the tooth to crack or break

The difference between a dental pin and an implant:
An implant consists of several parts, with the first part needing to be placed into the jawbone. The material of the implant pin, or the artificial root, is titanium. Various metals have been tested for the implant base, and titanium is the only metal that the human body does not react to. The implant base must connect to the jawbone. Therefore, after it is placed in the jaw, a certain amount of time must pass for it to integrate, which can take anywhere from 3 to 5 months, depending on the type of tooth and other factors.
